Challenge Create a user interface for a SmartKitchen software aimed at restaurant franchise owners, managers, and technicians. This interface needed to accommodate a wide array of users with different goals, sets of daily tasks, and tech savviness.

Diverse User Types with different goals and workflows.

We had to find a solution that worked for a diverse range of users varying from franchise managers to equipment technicians. Following a period of intensive research and analysis of the goals for each user persona, we created a set of optimized workflows to address the most common tasks. These workflows are streamlined and enable each type of user to be fully efficient without any distraction from irrelevant UI components.

User personas have been divided into several categories for this project: Franchise owners, who are focused on the day to day operations, location managers who are concerned with keeping they store running, technicians who provide maintenance, and manufacturers that monitor system performance.

UI Optimized for real user workflows

We strive to design systems that are practical yet very easy to use. The newly designed UI provides users with all the necessary tools for users to monitor energy use, incident details, real-time equipment stats, etc. The new UI guides them towards the best path for fulfilling a task.

This was achieved by collecting all the vital system information and displaying it on the dashboard to empower users and increase efficiency. By summarizing all the statuses found on the dashboard screen and indicating the urgency of each task, users are able to efficiently plan their future activity.

Our goal was to create a UI that was simple enough that any end-user would be able to understand the data displayed within 3-5 seconds of looking at the screen.

The data presented will equip the user with the necessary information needed to make decisions such as reducing operational costs, or providing validation that use of the system is in fact increasing operator efficiency. The highest ROI found in data and metrics analysis are highlighted within the system and are brought to the attention of operators. Any data that require further investigation or action is rerouted to alert mechanisms with clear instructions for users on that end.

Support for a broad range of devices

The UI is accessible from a variety of devices, although it was first designed for mobile devices since some user types will be using the application primarily on their phones and tablets. The UI is highly adaptive and responsive, and supportive of both horizontal and vertical orientations.
